about
La Barcheta was published in 1901 under the title Venezia, part of a cycle of six songs. Reynaldo Hahn (Caracas 1874 - Paris 1947), the son of a German Jew migrated to Venezuela, loved Venice and composed this in the imagined style of a Barcheta (gondolier’s song). In 1935 his opera based on Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice was acclaimed with enthusiasm. Hahn was forced to leave Paris in 1940 during the Nazi occupation, but returned at the end of the war in 1945 to fulfill his appointment as director of the Paris Opera.

Venice/Venezia - Words/Parole: Pietro Buratti / Music/Musica: Reynaldo Hahn
One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey
One of the best new albums of Yiddish and Klezmer music on Bandcamp in my opinion. The collaboration of two sensitive artists of different generations who know a lot about Yiddish and American music.
