about

Born in Venice in 1686, Benedetto Marcello was a composer and musicologist who transcribed the traditional melodies of the Italian Jews (for which he frequently visited the Ghetto of Venice), with his own harmonizations. Working because of his aristocratic status as a lawyer and magistrate, Marcello was best known for his Estro poetico-armonico (Venice, 1724–27), a musical setting of the first fifty Psalms, as paraphrased in Italian by his friend Girolamo Ascanio Giustiniani. “Ma’oz Tzur” (“My Refuge, my Rock of Salvation! It is pleasant to sing Your praises”) is a liturgical poem sung during the holiday of Hannukah: Marcello interpolated this song into his own setting of Psalm 15.
