about
In Morocco, the Mellah was a walled Jewish quarter of a city, with a fortified gateway, especially since the early 19th century. Usually, the Jewish quarter was situated near the royal palace or the residence of the governor, in order to protect its inhabitants from recurring riots. In contrast, rural Mellahs were separate villages inhabited solely by the Jews. Local Jews and Muslims, as well as resident Europeans, lived through the profound transformations of the pre- and early colonial periods. Their music reflects these variegated influences. The words are from a poetic introduction to the first prayer recited on Sabbath mornings, “Nishmat Kol Ḥai—The Breath of All Beings.”

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey

One of the best new albums of Yiddish and Klezmer music on Bandcamp in my opinion. The collaboration of two sensitive artists of different generations who know a lot about Yiddish and American music.
