about

Salomone (or Salamone) de’ Rossi is the best known Jewish composer of the Italian Renaissance, and a court musician of the Gonzaga rulers of Mantua. Rossi was also active in Venice, where he published his collections of music and where he interacted with the famed Rabbi Leone Modena and maybe with Sara Copio Sullam, the protagonists of the cultural life of the Ghetto. He died around 1630 after the sack of Mantua by the Austrian army, or in the subsequent plague which ravaged the area. His legacy lived on in the Accademia degli Impediti (or Imperiti) in the Venetian Ghetto, where many Mantuan Jews fled after the Austrian invasion. This song was written for three specific women, famous singers at the court of Ferrara in Italy, who were known collectively as ‘the three ladies.’
