Gershon Sirota (1874-1943) began his career as a cantor in Odessa. After starting his his lengthy and successful collaboration with choirmaster Leo Lowe in Vilna’s Shtatshul, in 1907 he became head cantor at the Great Synagogue of Warsaw where for the next 19 years thousands of people wanted to hear his legendary voice. He traveled on concert tours all around Europe and the US, NYC debut at a fully-packed Carnegie Hall. During World War II, he was forced into the Warsaw ghetto but because of his wide-spread fame, he was given the rare permission to leave by the Nazis. In the end, this great man chose to stay with those he loved. He and his entire family perished during the 1943 uprising. “Retsey” is a part of the daily Amidah Prayer.

Warsaw/Varsavia - Words/Parole: Traditional liturgy / Music/Musica: Repertoire of Gershon Sirota
One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey
One of the best new albums of Yiddish and Klezmer music on Bandcamp in my opinion. The collaboration of two sensitive artists of different generations who know a lot about Yiddish and American music.
