about

Sara Copio Sullam (Venice 1592?-1641) was the most accomplished Jewish woman writer of early-modern Italy and hosted a literary academy in the Ghetto. Her poetry, her correspondence with the poet and priest Anselmo Cebà, and her Manifesto in which she defended herself from the accusation of denying the immortality of the soul, made her a pioneer of Jewish-Christian cross-cultural exchange. She wrote this sonnet as a preface for her Manifesto, which was her last published work before she was forced to withdraw from public life.
